How Charter Oil Began

At the turn of the 20th Century, ice and coal were delivered to homes and businesses mostly by young immigrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families. This work was hard but fruitful for the ones who realized the opportunity and grasped at the chance to achieve their "American Dream."

As technology advanced in the 1920s and 1930s, refrigeration powered by electricity replaced ice and became the standard for keeping household foods fresh and safe for consumption. Fuel oil was rapidly becoming the modern choice for commercial and domestic heating. Through innovation and refinements in technology, the oil burner revolutionized the concept of automatic heating and in the way that people could produce abundant hot water for everyday use.

The history of Charter Oil goes back to the earliest days of ice and coal delivery.

Giovanni Massaro, the patriarch of the Massaro family, left Italy and came to America in 1905 to start a family and build a future for himself. In those days everyone used ice as a means of food refrigeration; thus, the Massaro Ice and Coal business was formed.

As good fortune would have it, Giovanni produced 5 sons and a daughter. This became the foundation of the Massaro Ice and Coal business of Great Neck. The transition from the ice and coal business to home fuel oil delivery was a natural one.

The business did well. With the advent of WWII in 1939, four of the Massaro boys answered the call and were proud to serve their country, and gave their all. When Vito Massaro returned from service overseas he came back to the family business and shortly thereafter married a pretty young girl from Brooklyn. A few years later he informed his family of his wish to start his own business and decided that Massapequa would be the perfect location.

Purchasing an office building and an oil terminal on Brooklyn Ave., Charter Oil was founded in 1959. Today, his two sons Jeff and Joe proudly continue the family tradition.

Storage Facility

Security of supply is essential, and Charter Oil maintains an excellent and long standing business relationship with all our suppliers, vendors and manufacturers. The advantage of having our own oil terminal enables our oil delivery department to be extremely efficient in loading and reloading our trucks as we schedule, route and make our fuel oil deliveries.
